Jared McCain matched the Duke basketball single-game freshman scoring record with 35 points in the Blue Devils’ 76-67 win at Florida State on Saturday. The five-star freshman guard tied Zion Williamson’s mark while also setting the new freshman record for most made 3-pointers in a single game. McCain was red-hot from deep, connecting on seven of his eight attempts from beyond the arc — including each of his first six in the opening half.
“That was a special performance,” Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said postgame. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of my 15 years, but especially as a coach for 11, to see a lot of special performances by any player, but especially freshmen. That was up there with any of them. It really was. … For me, it was just his grit, his will and his determination to win was special.”
The victory is the fourth-straight for the Blue Devils, who remain a half-game back of first-place North Carolina in the ACC standings.
