Steve Spagnuolo could find in New York his second full-time opportunity to be a head coach.
Just not with the team you would expect.
The Jets put in a request Wednesday to interview Spagnuolo, the Chiefs defensive coordinator, for their head coach vacancy, The Post confirmed.
He is the only coach in NFL history to win four Super Bowl rings as a coordinator on either side of the ball (three with the Chiefs after one with the Giants).
Two great seasons as Giants defensive coordinator — including authoring a masterpiece against the high-scoring undefeated Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl — catapulted Spagnuolo into becoming Rams head coach in 2009.
He went 10-38 over three seasons.
Spagnuolo returned to the Giants as defensive coordinator in 2015 and was the interim head coach for four games after Ben McAdoo was fired in 2017.
He ultimately built what is one of the great assistant résumés after rejoining the Chiefs in 2019.
Spagnuolo also was requested for a head coach interview by the Raiders.
Because the Chiefs have a first-round bye, Spagnuolo is free to conduct virtual interviews between Wednesday and Monday’s end of the wild-card playoffs under NFL rules.
All interviews are capped at three hours in length.
In-person interviews with coaches under contract cannot begin until Jan. 20.
If the Chiefs are preparing for the AFC Championship Game, Spagnuolo must wait until Jan. 27 — when either the season will be over or his team is on a bye week before the Super Bowl — for an in-person meeting.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy — a former Bears head coach — interviewed with the Jets on Wednesday.
Spagnuolo and Nagy are two of a reported 15 candidates that the Jets have requested to speak with for their head coach vacancy.
The Jets and The 33rd Team — a think tank led by former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum — are teaming up to run parallel head coach and general manager searches.
Chris Spielman — special assistant to the president of the Lions — reportedly will be interviewed for the general manager vacancy.
Rick Spielman, Chris’ brother, works for The 33rd Team after a 16-year run as Vikings general manager.
