It is always a special occasion when a young player gets to step up from one of Bayern Munich’s youth teams to show their mettle with the first team. One such occasion came in the friendly against RB Salzburg, as some youngsters were subbed on to make impressions of their own. Two of the youngsters in question even offered their thoughts on the special occasion, via FCBayern.com.
First was Jonathan Asp Jensen, making just his second appearance for the senior team and explaining his utter joy at scoring a goal: “I didn’t expect the ball to come to me, but luckily I was prepared. It felt great to score the goal, the jersey will have a special place in my family home. My teammates were all happy for me and congratulated me,” the Danish midfield maestro explained.
Next was Grayson Dettoni, the American center back who was making his debut for the senior team yet managed to stay completely calm: “It’s an incredible feeling when the coach calls you on and you have to get ready for the game. Surprisingly, I wasn’t nervous at all when I was substituted on, I just concentrated completely on the game. FC Bayern has been my favorite club all my life, and I’ve always dreamed of playing for the professionals. That dream has now come true.”
There is nothing like a player saying they have been a fan of Bayern their whole life to make them sympathetic to other Bayern fans, eh? The likes of Jonah Kusi-Asare, Michael Scott and Max Schmitt also got to play some minutes and all demonstrated some indicators of their potential. Even with so many players out on loan or not fit enough to play, the Bayern academy still had multiple standout players to offer the first team. If that is not a good sign for the current strength of the academy, then what is?
