The words “Bayern Munich” once went hand in hand with mentality. However, over the past few seasons it seems Bayern have somewhat lost the killer mentality so often associated with the German club.
Now, after another strong response off the back of a big Champions League defeat and a unified team effort to hold onto a 2-1 lead against SC Freiburg, it seems Vincent Kompany is slowly building up his side’s mentality once again.
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich tends to agree.
“Yes, almost only mentality. We’ve played better games before, but today’s win does us a lot of good,” said Kimmich in characterizing how Bayern ended up triumphant on the day (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “After the 2-0, we lost a bit of control, which is human. Freiburg scored out of nowhere, it’s not like they were in a phase of pressure. After that they believed in themselves and the fans pushed them.
“Every one of us tried everything to defend and take the win. It’s important to realize that we can’t always control every game with 85% possession. There are games like today where you get two to three chances, you have to score two and then defend.”
After Matthias Ginter’s 68th-minute goal, the game reeked of the sort of typical Bayern collapse fans have been accustomed to seeing from time to time in recent seasons — losing control and ultimately losing points that should have been secured.
But on the contrary, Kompany’s side came together, defended with discipline and snatched a crucial three points that sees Die Rekordmeister go six points clear of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table.
