Losing Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022 was a big blow for Bayern Munich,. For so many years, he was the guarantee of goals that could so often drag Bayern past opponents. Losing him and that guarantee of goals was such a hammer blow that the German giants were willing to break their transfer record to sign a 30-year-old Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
And the Englishman brought the guarantee of goals back, scoring nearly a goal a game to return sight of a world class #9 to the Bavarians. But which of the two is/was better? Would one prefer to have Lewandowski in his prime or Kane in his prime in Munich? Kingsley Coman, who has witnessed both player’s quality up close as their teammate, was asked to compare the two:
“They are pretty similar, but I would say Harry has a bit more impact in the game. [He’s] in the game building, while Lewy is really a box striker,” Coman mused, via @iMiaSanMia. “[He] can also really keep the ball good and everything, but I would say Harry can really drop and can play almost like as a 10 or midfielder, brings the ball up sometimes so obviously sometimes he’s less in the box. He has more of this capacity while Lewandowski can drop also a little bit, but he has to be in the box, so he cannot drop as much as Harry. I would say this is the big difference. In the box they are pretty similar even though I think Lewandowski is a bit more like moving good or killer in the box, but then Harry has this distance shot that Lewandowski has, but less. Harry is really good outside of the box, outside he is really dangerous as well.”
Well, the first thing to note is that Coman is still refining his English. But secondly, he acknowledges that both players have their obvious qualities but that Kane is perhaps a little more versatile.
