Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman made an interesting comparison between two recent Bayern coaches — Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann — in his chat with Rio Ferdinand on his podcast this month.
Coman, for his part, seems to have preferred Tuchel.
“I like Tuchel. When he arrived at Bayern, even though he didn’t have crazy good results, I remember his first speech in the dressing room — we were all like: We are back! There was so much power,” Coman described (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “He reminded us of how people who are not at Bayern see Bayern. The intensity, the way other teams were scared of Bayern. He said we need to bring back this intensity.
“With [Julian] Nagelsmann, even though he was doing good, we were playing in different positions, I was playing at wing-back. With Tuchel, we came back a bit to simplicity. He said I want everyone to be at their natural position, I want to put you where you are good, and then at the game you can adapt. I think for national teams that’s perfect.”
Complexity or simplicity — neither Tuchel nor Nagelsmann ended up succeeding in their task at Bayern. Coman’s comments are a small window into the complexity that top-level managers face in getting the most out of all their players.
