Liverpool dropped points for only fifth time under Arne Slot as rivals Manchester United battled to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.
The result extends Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, with a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal, but they will have hoped for more, particularly given they led here with as little as 10 minutes of the 90 left.
The first half ended goalless, but both sides had chances to take the lead. Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister spurned decent opportunities for the hosts, while Rasmus Højlund failed to beat Alisson from close range.
It was a fairly subdued first 45 minutes, at least in comparison with the second half.
At half-time, United had gone 552 minutes since they last scored a Premier League goal at Anfield, having had 43 shots away to Liverpool since Jesse Lingard scored for them on 16 December 2018.
But just six minutes into the second period, Bruno Fernandes slipped centre-back Lisandro Martínez in on goal to fire the visitors into a shock lead. It meant that United’s Anfield drought ended at 558 minutes – or nine hours and 18 minutes.
But Arne Slot’s title hopefuls responded in impressive fashion. Seven minutes later, Gakpo fired in an unstoppable equaliser – meaning he has scored in three successive Premier League matches for the first time – before Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front with a penalty following a Matthijs De Ligt handball. That was the Egyptian’s 31st goal or assist in Liverpool’s 19 games in the Premier League in 2024-25.
It was natural after that goal to assume Liverpool would hold out for the win. Coming into the game, they had dropped only two points from winning positions in Premier League games all season – the fewest of all teams in the top flight.
But United, battling to avoid losing a fourth consecutive league match within the same season for the first time since 1979, found a way back into the game. Amad fired in with 10 minutes of the game remaining to level things once again.
Liverpool would not be able to find a winner – though Virgil van Dijk missed a huge late chance – and United earned a draw which ended their losing streak at three games.
Slot’s side remain huge favourites to win the league, but this result will have kept their title rivals’ hopes alive.
