Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund explained the club’s extensive preparations at the goalkeeper position in this week’s press conference ahead of a match vs. SC Freiburg.
“There are two aspects: The short-term outlook for the coming months, where we’re well equipped. Then there’s the long-term outlook, where we’re discussing things,” Freund said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s a very important position, where we’ve been very well covered at Bayern in recent years. That’s also our goal for the years to come.”
Bayern Munich is clearly thinking about life after Manuel Neuer — even if that may still be a couple of years away at this point, if reports that Neuer will get a new deal come to fruition.
But you can never prepare too much, and Bayern looks set to continue throwing darts at the wall. The current interest in FC Köln’s Jonas Urbig looks very serious — and it seems the Bavarians are convinced of his qualities. That may be why Bayern looks set to sign Urbig immediately, even with solid coverage at the position for the rest of the year.
