It wasn’t exactly a case of Pep Guardiola’s men being back to their best, but they began 2025 with a win. Look back with the best facts and Opta data in our Man City vs West Ham stats page.
Manchester City recorded back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since October as they battled to a 4-1 victory at home to West Ham on Saturday.
The champions ended 2024 in dreadful form, winning just two of their final 14 matches across all competitions, a run that put their Champions League participation in doubt and has likely ended their title defence.
While the scoreline arguably flattered City somewhat, they ultimately had little difficulty seeing off West Ham in their first match of 2025, making it two wins on the bounce after beating Leicester City 2-0 last time out.
It took City just 10 minutes to open the scoring, as Savinho’s shot took a hefty deflection off Vladimir Coufal on its way in.
The Brazilian winger then supplied the pinpoint cross that allowed Erling Haaland to make it 2-0 with a header just before half-time, the Norwegian scoring at home in the league for the first time since 26 October.
Haaland doubled his tally for the day early in the second half, finding the net with a delicate chip following another well-placed pass from Savinho.
For Haaland, it was a first top-flight brace since mid-September, while Savinho recorded two assists in the same Premier League game for the first time.
Phil Foden netted only his second league goal of the campaign to make it 4-0 soon after, coolly slotting home Kevin De Bruyne’s pass after West Ham coughed up possession in their own defensive third.
Niclas Füllkrug pulled one back for the Hammers, but it had little impact in the grand scheme of things, as the game was already beyond Julen Lopetegui’s men.
Regardless of the result, City remain well off the pace in the Premier League, with leaders Liverpool 11 points ahead having also played two fewer games.
Nevertheless, City at least prevented Bournemouth from nudging them down into seventh, as Pep Guardiola’s men stay sixth in the table.
