Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions were unimpressive but did enough to go top of the Premier League. Re-live the action with all the key Opta data in our Manchester City vs Southampton stats page.
Manchester City extended their club-record Premier League unbeaten run to 32 games thanks to a slender – albeit comfortable – 1-0 win over struggling Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
When Erling Haaland opened the scoring in just the fifth minute with a close-range finish, you would’ve been forgiven for expecting an avalanche of goals in favour of the champions.
Further chances did arrive and Haaland somehow failed to add to his tally, having not scored since 22 September in the league before Saturday.
It ultimately mattered little, though there was a scare just before half-time when Cameron Archer hit the crossbar at the end of a rapid breakaway.
That was one of just five Southampton shots, however, and their inability to turn things around means it’s just the second time in their history that Saints have started a league campaign without a single win in their first nine games.
Similarly, this extended Southampton’s Premier League winless run to 22 matches stretching back to the 2022-23 season, making it their poorest such run in the competition.
City, on the other hand, remain unbeaten since losing to Aston Villa in December 2023 and return to the top of the table at least until Liverpool – two points behind – tussle with Arsenal on Sunday in a contest that could have major ramifications in the title race.
