Alejandro Garnacho has confirmed the deactivation of his X account just hours before Manchester United’s clash with rivals Liverpool.
The 20-year-old has found himself out of favour under boss Ruben Amorim in recent weeks.
Garnacho was a notable omission alongside Marcus Rashford from the Red Devils’ matchday squad for last month’s win away at Manchester City.
It has been reported that the reason for his absence was due to him appearing to turn his back on Amorim just three days prior to 2-1 victory at the Etihad.
Claims have surfaced online that the incident occurred as Amorim was giving the winger instructions prior to his introduction off the bench in the Europa League tie against Viktoria Plzen.
It was a suggestion that was denied by the player’s representatives, who insisted Garnacho didn’t mean to be disrespectful, putting it down to a simple misunderstanding.
Garnacho was immediately recalled to the squad by Amorim, though he has been left out of the starting XI in United‘s last four matches in all competitions.
Fan opinion still remains divided on Garnacho, who has been accused by some supporters of leaking team news, which has led to an internal investigation at United.
His brother Roberto has been rumoured to be the mole – a claim that he strenuously rejected in December.
And now, Garnacho has made a drastic action just hours before he is expected to be in action against the Reds at Anfield later on Sunday.
Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that his X account @agarnacho7 has been deactivated before the showdown in Merseyside.
Those searching for his profile are promoted with an error message which simply reads: “This account doesn’t exist.”‘
It remains unclear why the youngster has made the decision to deactivate his account.
Though Garnacho confirmed he had indeed closed it down on his Instagram profile, which is still active.
The Argentina international has updated his bio, which now includes the message, ‘NO TWITTER,’ alongside a red cross.
Full attention for Garnacho will now be on United’s clash with Liverpool as they look to win at Anfield for the first time since 2016.
Ex-Reds midfielder Danny Murphy has urged Amorim to put his differences aside with the player and start him against Arne Slot’s men.
Writing for the Daily Mail, he said: “I know there has been mention of Garnacho showing dissent to Amorim, and it may turn out he is not part of United’s long-term future because of the manager’s preferred formation.
“But whatever happens in the future should be set aside on Sunday. Liverpool away is a one-off.]
“It is United’s biggest fixture and Amorim desperately needs to get a result.
“For 90 minutes, forget about the future project – try to get a result now. Garnacho is one of the few assets he has that will worry Liverpool.”
