When it was announced at the end of January that Manuel Neuer had signed a new contract that would keep him at Bayern Munich until 2026, the common conception was that this would certainly be his last contract in Munich. Given that the legendary German goalkeeper will be 40 by the time his current terms expire and the fact that Bayern signed yet another potential replacement for Neuer during the winter transfer window in Jonas Urbig, staying until 2027 or beyond seemed virtually impossible to fathom.
But that is not the case for Manuel Neuer. He is keeping his options open: “The club and I wanted to extend for one year,” Bayern’s captain said, via @iMiaSanMia. “We’ll see what happens.”
Of course, it only makes sense for him to consider all his options. There are around 16 months until the expiry of his current contract and there is little reason to make a final decision on his stay in Munich yet. He will have all the time in the world to do that before 2026 rolls around. Still, it does seem unlikely Neuer will remain at Bayern beyond 2026.
