Luka Garza on his benchmates: “I know just from experience, whenever these these opportunities come, you don’t want to let them pass by. … I’ve seen opportunities pass by me, and I’m not letting that happen anymore, and I think some of these guys have the same mindset.” – 12:50 AM

Can the Mavs make history with no 2025 All-Stars? 😳 pic.x.com/CGOgtyFtSi – 9:48 PM

Shocker that the Mavericks, six months removed from making the NBA Finals, failed to land an All-Star for the first time since 2018.
Perfectly understandable in Doncic’s case, but in the fan/media voting Doncic was third among West guards and Kyrie Irving was fifth. – 6:53 PM

My two West snubs are Kyrie Irving and Domantas Sabonis.
I would’ve picked them over Alperen Sengun and James Harden. – 6:51 PM

Kyrie Irving will find out if he makes his ninth All-Star appearance on Thursday when reserves are announced. Here’s what the Mavs had to say about it.

Wolves offense has been … ick. Not a ton of swift ball movement. Three turnovers. But the prospect of Rob Dillingham-Luka Garza minutes looms. – 9:19 PM

Naji Marshall returns tonight after dealing with an illness, but will be limited to about 15 minutes, per Jason Kidd. The others are all out: Doncic, Lively, Kleber, Powell, Exum. – 6:38 PM

Looks like VJ Edgecombe’s confidence is absolutely pumping. Six 3s vs. BYU, 28 points, 5 assists. Great rhythm getting into his shot. Don’t need Kyrie’s handle to get to spots when you explode or change direction as quick as VJ. Also maintaining vision after creating advantage. pic.x.com/f7ecSdSbCh – 9:12 AM

I see there’s a lot of talk today about young, talented defensively gifted wings.
Let me just mention Jalen Williams is 23 years old, and a premier defensive player that also averages 21-5-5 + 1.8 steals per game.
Players doing that this season:
– SGA
– Jokic
– Luka
– Dub – 5:13 PM

More on this storyline
Irving is having one of the most efficient shooting seasons of his career, averaging 24.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. His 41.9% mark from the 3-point line is a career-high. Irving’s other shooting splits are 89.7% from the free-throw line and 48.2% from the field. Irving was asked after the Mavericks’ loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Jan. 20 if he felt deserving of an All-Star appearance this season. “I’m an All-Star regardless in this league, whether I’m voted in or not,” he said. “I definitely feel like I’ve put my best foot forward this season, if that’s honored by the guys voting for me, or the fans or the media, I’m appreciative.” -via Dallas Morning News / January 31, 2025
Irving, who entered the game with 17,997 career points, reached the milestone with a mid-range jumper before finishing with 36 points and nine assists. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd sees Irving surpassing the 20,000 mark soon. “Yeah, he’s only 2,000 away from 20,000,” Kidd told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “I think he’ll get 20,000 plus. Just his ability to score. We know the way he finishes with both hands, his creativity. I think, again, we can’t take him for granted. Eighteen thousand is a lot of points.” -via Dallas Hoops Journal / January 30, 2025
Reflecting on reaching the 18,000-point milestone, Irving shared his emotional response, highlighting the challenges that caused him to miss games earlier in his career. He felt he should have reached this mark sooner as a result. “I was about to drop a tear,” Irving said. “Just the past few years, the games that I’ve missed, and the injuries, I feel like I should have been at 18,000 a long time ago. It’s all God’s plan, so I’m not going to question it, but I’m grateful.” -via Dallas Hoops Journal / January 30, 2025
According to a source, the Heat also has felt it should receive a carrot (likely a draft pick) if it takes players whose contracts run through next season. The Heat has been reluctant — but hasn’t ruled it out — to take on non All-Stars whose contracts run past 2025-26, when it is positioned to have more than $80 million in cap space that summer. Several All-Stars, including Luka Doncic, are eligible to become free agents that summer. -via Miami Herald / January 28, 2025
According to a source, the Heat also has felt it should receive a carrot (likely a draft pick) if it takes players whose contracts run through next season. Taking on non All-Stars whose contracts run past 2025-26 has been a nonstarter for Miami, which is positioned to have more than $80 million in cap space that summer. Several All-Stars, including Luka Doncic, are eligible to become free agents that summer. Though most stars now end up signing extensions without making it to free agency, the Heat wants to have the flexibility that summer to acquire a star who wants to change teams, via either free agency or trade. Miami, naturally, is willing to try to acquire a star before then if one becomes available. -via Miami Herald / January 28, 2025
