Bayern Munich is in the midst of several key contract situations with many of the teams foundational players — Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Alphonso Davies chief among them.
Bild offered an update (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) on where things stand:
Bayern have been in talks with both Kimmich and Musiala over a new contract for weeks. Both players said they wanted to think about it during the winter break, which is now over. However, a quick decision is still not expected. Things are likely to take weeks or even months.
Both Kimmich and Musiala are making their decision primarily dependent on the sporting situation: How strong will the team be in the next few years? Can they compete for the Champions League title on a permanent basis? And: Will Bayern manage to keep their top players?
At the moment, neither Kimmich nor Musiala is particularly keen to make the first move. Because there’s also the financial aspect: both players want their new salary to reflect their importance. And both sides are interested to see how much the other gets. Kimmich, in particular, the topic of appreciation plays a big role: In the past, he often did not have the feeling that he was getting adequate support from the club.
Meanwhile, Alphonso Davies is taking control of his negotiating situation through his performances. Back in top form, the Canadian knows he does not have to take any offer he is not comfortable with:
The future of Alphonso Davies also plays a role in the ‘contract domino’ – he’s on the way back to his old strength, is also a good friend of Musiala and thus also a factor in his well-being in Munich – as well as Leroy Sané.
Waiting is particularly beneficial for Kimmich and Davies, who are out of contract in the summer. They can listen to other offers in calm and keep the club waiting if Bayern doesn’t offer them enough. And Musiala also knows that every top club in Europe would take him with open arms.
Bayern Munich wants to get things done right, but time is of the essence. Surely, part of the reason why Musiala and Kimmich are delaying things is because the salary for the first signing will dictate what the second players asks for.
Contract chess is the game of the season…
