Bayern Munich made a number of big signings in last summer’s transfer window —but none were as impactful as the selection of head coach Vincent Kompany.
If you didn’t know it yet, the bosses are delighted with their new man.
“I think the biggest gain we have is Vincent Kompany,” Bayern executive board member for sport Max Eberl stated simply in recent comments captured by Bild, via @iMiaSanMia. “Because the same players have been here in recent years and last year in particular we didn’t see that [good atmosphere]. So players like Leon Goretzka, for example, but also like Kim [Min-jae], like [Dayot] Upamecano, [Konrad] Laimer, [Serge] Gnabry, [Kingsley] Coman, you can actually go through almost all of them, everyone is enjoying football again and that obviously makes a big difference in a team.
“Vinnie gives every player importance, playing time. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Manuel Neuer or the last players on the bench or sitting in the stands. He speaks to everyone and that naturally creates a sense of value for the player. He simply speaks to everyone and gives everyone the feeling of being important in a moment and that is important for the players as well as for every person.”
Okay — maybe not everyone at every point in time — see Mathys Tel, who is being relentlessly pursued by big-name clubs such as Chelsea while too often languishing as an unused sub on the bench. But as Goretzka’s example shows, such situations are temporary if you work for it.
As for why all these good vibes were not present last season under now-England manager Thomas Tuchel?
“I don’t need to analyze last season anymore, we’ve put that behind us,” Eberl quipped.
Is Bayern Munich setting the bar too low for itself with some of the decisions that it is making? Where does Bayern need to to improve the roster now…and in the future? Should the club just stay quiet about Joshua Kimmich’s contract situation? We think so! Let’s talk about all of that and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works Show.
