Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback Carter Smith, the Sunshine State’s Gatorade Player of the Year, has been committed to Michigan since Nov. 14, and following the departure of head coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL, he plans to stay that way.
“I think as long as they hire (offensive coordinator) Sherrone (Moore) and keep (quarterbacks) Coach (Kirk) Campbell nothing will change,” Smith’s father tells 247Sports. “They seem to think that’s what’s gonna happen.”
The younger Smith believes that’s how it will play out.
“I’m ready for it and I’m excited,” Smith said.
“Just from talking to (Moore) a little bit and being around him as much as I have he’s a very down-to-earth dude that’s very passionate about his players and the team and winning. He loves it. It’s hard not to want to love it for him.”
Smith added the same thing for Campbell.
“They’re both great people, down to earth,” Smith said. “The passion that they have for developing kids and creating those bonds and winning its great to have in your corner.”
Other schools are trying to chip away at Smith including Florida State who will have Mike Norvell and Tony Tokarz on campus Thursday. Chris Weinke from Georgia Tech will be there too.
“I’m good where I’m at,” Smith said.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound junior quarterback passed for 2,223 yards and 29 touchdowns this past season, with 715 rushing yards and 19 more scores.
