College football’s Week 12 slate wasn’t finished after No. 12 Georgia’s upset win over No. 7 Tennessee in prime-time.
Two Rocky Mountain matchups finished well after 1 a.m. ET and the results sent shockwaves through the rankings.
No. 6 BYU finally saw its unblemished season tarnished with a 17-13 loss to Kansas. It’s goal to join the 1984 national championship team as the only undefeated squads in the program’s history is now no more.
Kansas also ended then-No. 17 Iowa State’s undefeated season in Week 10, marking the first time it’s done so in back-to-back weeks in program history.
The Cougars (9-1) still lead the Big 12, but now No. 17 Colorado (8-2) and Arizona State (8-2) have closed the gap in their quest to clinch a berth in the conference championship game.
BYU’s loss will certainly shake up the College Football Playoff rankings, opening the door for Mountain West leader No. 13 Boise State to potentially overtake them for the final first-round bye.
Meanwhile, No. 18 Washington State upheld the “Pac-12 After Dark” moniker with a last minute loss to New Mexico.
The Lobos scored the game-winning touchdown with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation to end the Cougars’ extremely slim playoff chances with a 38-35 win.
It was the first time New Mexico had defeated a ranked opponent since the 2003 season (No. 23 Utah), per the FS1 broadcast.
With the Big 12 crown still well up for grabs, BYU and Arizona State will face off in Week 13 with the loser likely eliminated from contention.
Colorado controls its own destiny, needing to just win its final two contests to clinch a spot in the conference title game.
