With two goals and an assist in Liverpool’s draw with Newcastle on Wednesday, Mohamed Salah both scored and assisted in a Premier League game for the 37th time, breaking the all-time record held by Wayne Rooney.
Mohamed Salah added a Premier League record to his lengthy list of personal achievements at Liverpool in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
With two goals goal and an assist, the Egyptian has now both scored and assisted in 37 separate matches across his Premier League career, overtaking Wayne Rooney’s tally of 36.
He was very nearly the hero here, as he directly contributed to all three Liverpool goals as the league leaders almost came from behind to win, only for a late Fabian Schär equaliser to break their hearts.
There was to be a consolation of sorts for Salah, as he moved clear at the top of the leaderboard for scoring and assisting in the most Premier League games.
Rooney had held the record since January 2016, when he scored and assisted in a single game for the 33rd time in the Premier League, breaking the record previously set by Thierry Henry. The former England star repeated the feat three more times in the competition, eventually scoring and assisting in a Premier League match for the final time in December 2017, doing so for Everton in their 3-1 win over Swansea City.
It’s taken seven years for a player to overtake him, but Salah both scoring and assisting against Newcastle means he has done so in six games in the 2024-25 Premier League season alone. That’s already equalled his personal record for a single Premier League season, level with 2017-18 and 2021-22. With 24 games left in Liverpool’s league campaign, there’s a very strong chance he’ll surpass his previous best.
Overall, his two goals and assist on Wednesday night take him to 247 goal involvements across his Premier League career, the eighth most by a player in the history of the competition, and four away from becoming just the seventh to reach 250 overall.
With his contract up at the end of the season, and so far no sign of Liverpool renewing it, it remains to be seen how far up the Premier League goal involvement ranking Salah can get.
