The college football transfer portal quieted down this month after a hectic stretch that sent hordes of elite talent to new schools. Things will pick back up again later in the spring, but for now, the dust has settled enough to effectively grade each program’s offseason talent acquisition efforts. Of the nation’s projected top 25 teams for the 2024 season, almost all found instant-impact contributors via the portal with many landing game-changing players.
Of course, some transfer classes are better than others, but essentially every playoff contender filled deficiencies with experienced newcomers. Those that did so to the greatest extent — such as Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Oregon — positioned themselves atop the 2024 cycle’s team rankings.
In most cases, the highest-ranked player in those classes projects to be the most impactful roster addition. But that is not a universal truth, as some transfers bring more to the table than their talent alone as they fill glaring areas of need.
