Under Rhett Lashlee, the SMU Mustangs have been focused on keeping Dallas talent at home. They’ve succeeded in large part thanks to their staff of recruiters and the effort put in to connect with programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. That effort could pay off in the form of Zay Gentry. The three-star cornerback from McKinney (Texas) holds 30 offers from the likes of Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Nebraska and TCU.
At 6-foot-1, 165 pounds, Gentry is ranked as the No. 42 cornerback in the nation and No. 50 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports. A two-year starter at McKinney, Gentry tallied 41 tackles, 4 pass break ups and 2 interceptions.
After speaking with sources over the weekend, I’ve entered a 247Sports Crystal Ball for Gentry to land at SMU. Those we spoke with near the recruitment felt the Mustangs are in the best position to land him thanks to the efforts of cornerbacks coach Ricky Hunley Jr. Hunley and the rest of the staff have done a great job building a relationship with Gentry and his family. A source familiar with the recruitment feels that those around Gentry would prefer to have him stay at home and play for the Mustangs as they move to the ACC. That move is a big part of why SMU could be more of a factor in Dallas recruiting circles.
