For the second week running, Manchester City dropped points from a winning position, this time stuttering to a draw with Newcastle after Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot in the second half.
Much has been made of the absence of key midfielder Rodri, who will miss the whole season with an ACL injury suffered in the draw against Arsenal last week, and City were way off their best without him here.
They did go ahead through Josko Gvardiol after some neat work down the left from Jack Grealish, but never truly threatened to add their lead after that. They were made to pay just before the hour mark, too, when Anthony Gordon converted from the penalty spot having been brought down in the box by Ederson. It was the seventh penalty Gordon had won since the start of last season in Premier League games – at least four more than anyone else.
Newcastle ended the game the stronger, and may even feel like this was a missed opportunity to beat the reigning champions.
City remain top of the table for a few hours at least, with Arsenal and Liverpool able to overtake them later on Saturday.
