The NFL has changed a lot over its history, but \several monumental changes have been made over the past 20 years.
Many rules have been changed, largely for player safety, which has received mixed reviews from the fanbase.
One of the most recent rule changes was the league’s approach to kickoffs, a rule that was first implemented this season.
While it might not have gone over well at first, there have been very few special teams injuries this season, and there have been more exciting special teams plays as a result.
Another rule that was implemented during this change was the approach to an onside kick, as teams now have to declare that they are attempting one, letting the opposing team know their plan.
This too, has received mixed reviews, and after watching what has happened this year, it appears that the league is looking into changing this procedure again.
According to NFL executive Troy Vincent via Tom Pelissero, onside kick alternatives are being considered for the future.
NFL exec Troy Vincent also mentions an openness to seriously considering alternatives to the onside kick, including a single offensive play to retain possssion. Says those proposals have gained support in recent years and coaches could design something creative. One to watch.

Pelissero mentioned the possibility of a team getting one offensive play to retain possession of the ball, which could create more excitement at the end of games, especially for teams that are trailing with limited time remaining.
This would affect a lot of strategy and game planning, not to mention the betting markets, which will also have to be considered when discussing a possible change.
