Noussair Mazraoui seemed like the one Bayern Munich had been waiting for.
A technical and dynamic right-back is not always easy to come by, and here was a talented Ajax product, heading into his prime years, and dropping into Bayern’s lap — on a free transfer, too.
But that was the summer transfer window of 2022. Just two seasons later, Mazraoui is already out the door and now playing, alongside fellow class of 2022 arrival (and Ajax alum) Matthijs de Ligt, plying his trade at Manchester United — where the pair have reunited under former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.
Much could probably be said about the reasons for his departure. Mazraoui himself summarizes it to one word — comfort.
“Two seasons playing at Bayern, I needed another step, based on a lot of reasons,” Mazraoui said in comments captured by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell (via @iMiaSanMia). “I felt OK there but I had a feeling I could feel more comfortable somewhere else. Manchester United came in. I don’t think I have to explain why I go to such a club.”
Well — many a Bayern fan is surely sorry it didn’t work out in Bavaria. All the best to Nous at Man U and in the Premier League!
