In 2021, Bayern Munich launched FC Bayern World Squad project, which would see countless aspiring professional players send clips of their highlights to Bayern, be evaluated before a small, select U19 group would be chosen each year to go on a multi week training camp with some of Bayern’s staff and former notable Bavarian players and play for a professional contract at either Bayern or another club.
Diego Contento and Roy Makaay were the two headline coaches this year, who formed part of a group that would evaluate the players and if they could represent Bayern. In the previous 3 editions of the FC Bayern World Squad, none of the players could earn a contract to stay in Munich. But this year, the coaching staff was completely convinced by the talent of the youngest player in the group, one of the players who was selected from a Bayern partner.
And so 16-year-old Maycon Douglas Cardozo signs through 2027 for Bayern’s U-17s via a recent official announcement from the club, joining from Sport Thai-Bavaria Football Academy (STB) in Thailand, an FC Bayern Youth Football Partner since 2015.
Head of the FC Bayern Campus Jochen Sauer has this to say about the signing: “We have been working successfully with Sport Thai Bavaria in Thailand for ten years now in the area of youth football. We are all the more delighted that a player for our youth team has now emerged from this partnership. This once again emphasizes how well our FC Bayern Pathway works in international youth football.”
Sure, the dual Portugal/Brazil international may have to contend with being a form of marketing for Bayern’s “FC Bayern Pathway”, but do not be fooled into thinking the signing was just a marketing gimmick. Cardozo may be slight in build, but he is skillful, quick, has a great understanding of the game and is a real talent. If his potential is realized, he can do special things in Munich.
