Love him or hate him, Pat McAfee was brought onto the set of ESPN’s “College GameDay” this past season to entertain. That’s one thing he knows how to do.
Some think that McAfee’s brash style is better suited for his long-form show and doesn’t work as well in a studio show format, but “College GameDay” is different than some other programs on television. Yes, it’s meant to be informative and a place where real football analysis can take place, but it’s also a tailgate within a tailgate.
It’s mainly meant to be a good time.
As such, McAfee was a great addition to the “College GameDay” crew, and during a recent conversation with Kirk Herbstreit on “The Pat McAfee Show”, the former punter made it seem as if something long-term may be in the works between the two sides.
Herbstreit asked McAfee if he had a contract lined up for the 2024 season and for many years beyond.
“We’re not getting into that,” McAfee said with a laugh (h/t On3). “I don’t know if (many, many years) is the case, but it will get figured out. And it will. It was an honor, it is an honor to be a part of ‘College GameDay.’”
“It’s an ongoing honor,” Herbstreit responded.
“Yeah, of course … the honor goes on,” McAfee said. “The honor goes on forever and ever.
“It better. It better,” Herbstreit said.
From that conversation alone, it sounds like McAfee could be on the Saturday morning panel for at least a few seasons to come.
And for ESPN, that would be a good thing. Whether or not you love him or hate him as a fan, the ratings love McAfee.
