MLB.com is keeping track of the latest news and rumors surrounding Pete Alonso.
Dec. 8: After landing Soto, is Alonso still an option for Mets?
Juan Soto’s free-agent tour has come to a close, with the superstar outfielder joining the Mets on a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal, multiple sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
With so much attention being paid to Soto, there hasn’t been much buzz surrounding Alonso this offseason, but that could change now that Soto is off the market.
It’s possible Soto’s deal with the Mets will spell the end of Alonso’s tenure with the team. However, with owner Steve Cohen’s deep pockets, we can never say never. After all, the team still has an opening at first base.
The Yankees also have a first-base vacancy and a need for a middle-of-the-order bat after missing out on Soto. Alonso could be a fit, especially after one of their other reported targets, infielder Willy Adames, reached a seven-year, $182 million deal with the Giants on Saturday.
