Transfer portal season is nearly here with college football’s spring window rapidly approaching. With just a week to go before the April 16 transfer window opens, teams across the country are setting their boards and evaluating their rosters to get ready for the hundreds of FBS players who will soon hit the open market.
The transfer portal is no longer a novelty. It’s an established method of roster construction for schools across the country, from contenders to programs in Year 1 of a rebuild.
To help set the tone for portal season, 247Sports gathered feedback from its deep stable of team site reporters (and some sources as well) while asking a simple question: What major need(s) does the team you cover have in the portal this offseason?
As a disclaimer, not every single Power Four school is represented in this article. But most are, and that creates a national picture of which programs need what in the portal this spring.
Of course, not every team need is represented here. Boards are ever evolving, and teams will often take proven depth at less obvious places of need this time of year to fill out their rosters.
Also, keep in mind that the spring will be a time in which many schools will shed weight. A lot of schools are over the 85-scholarship limit and will have to get rid of players instead of adding them.
So even if a team has a need listed here, it doesn’t mean they’ll always address them.
