One week away from the first College Football Playoff top 25 rankings, there are still eight unbeaten teams remaining with eyes on a national title. It’s time to project how many actually finish perfect and where the potential first loss could come in November.
Expect the logjam of unbeaten teams in conference play to work itself out, but there’s a scenario in the ACC and Big Ten in which one of those league’s unblemished teams is potentially left out of their league title games based on scheduling. In both conferences, there are three teams in each league who don’t play one another this season — Clemson, Miami, SMU, Indiana, Oregon and Penn State.
In the event those teams end up in three-way ties, trips to the respective ACC and Big Ten title games would be decided by conference records of conference opponents. Chaos scenario indeed right? We’re expecting everything to sort itself out and not get to that level of bizarre, however.
