Believe it or not, the college baseball season gets started this week even amid frigid conditions in much of the country. Like with the professional ranks, the college game features a marathon of a season that routinely starts in mid-February and runs through late June at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
This time last year, LSU looked like the favorite to win it all thanks to a loaded class of incoming transfers. While the Tigers floundered at times during the regular season, they came together when it mattered and defeated SEC rival Florida in the CWS Finals.
The Tigers return plenty of talent, but they’re not the favorites this time around. Instead, that title belongs to preseason No. 1-ranked Wake Forest — which narrowly fell to LSU in the CWS semifinals. In general, this feels like a slightly less top-heavy season as a handful of teams could make their case as national championship contenders right now.
