With every passing week, the number of undefeated teams in college football shrinks. By the end of the regular season, perhaps less than a handful will have an empty loss column. In the meantime, though, optimism abounds for the eight programs that have yet to taste defeat through nine weeks of action.
Unsurprisingly, multiple preseason favorites to compete for College Football Playoff berths boast perfect records. Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State and Washington headline the squads firmly in contention for a national championship. Additionally, three Group of Five programs are 8-0 entering the final month of the campaign: Air Force, James Madison and Liberty.
With just four games remaining until conference championship week, the nation’s best teams will continue to go head-to-head, helping league title races take shape. Only the truly elite can sustain perfection through the end of the year, so it is just a matter of time before the loss column receives a tally or two for teams outside the top tier.
