Somehow, Carl’veon Young went until Oct. 26 without an offer. Well, two weeks later, he’s committed to Oklahoma State, which must get some credit for targeting the late-cycle riser from powerhouse Carl Albert in Oklahoma City metro.
Young, whose brother is 2025 prep basketball recruit Carlsheon Young, has also played basketball and competes in track and field. An Oklahoma 5A state qualifier in the high jump and long jump, Young posted a Spring 2024 personal best of 6-6 in the high jump.
That explosive athleticism shows on the gridiron, where Young has recorded 44 tackles, eight for loss, two sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble for a Carl Albert squad that has won the past two Oklahoma 5A state championships. While Young’s size is not verified, he’s listed 6-4, 215 and looks impressive on tape, long-levered and twitchy simultaneously.
Is he a full-time off-ball linebacker? Is he an edge defender? Perhaps some variety of hybrid? Young could potentially play any and all, and he’s displayed downhill pursuit juice and in-space coverage competency this fall.
Young debuts with a high three-star 89 rating on 247Sports as a potentially high-ceiling defensive chameleon who checks a number of boxes that regularly manifest in NFL Draft results among similar defenders: two-way experience (nine touches, 48 yards, one TD in 2023), three-sport participation, and perceived strong physical traits. — Gabe Brooks, 247Sports national scouting analyst
