Bayern Munich’s acquisition of Mathys Tel was a difficult one. Then a 17-year-old at Stade Rennes with barely any professional experience, the French club knew exactly what kind of talent they had at the club. So, despite having granted Tel less than 100 minutes of professional football, Rennes charged Bayern a fee worth around an initial €20 million that could rise to nearly €30 million. And, if the report @iMiaSanMia captured is to be believed, a sell on clause was included as well:
Rennes have a variable sell-on clause of 10-15% for Mathys Tel, the longer Tel stays at Bayern, the lower the % becomes.
After two and half years at Bayern, that sell on clause cannot have fallen too much. Any sale to the likes of Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur would have seen a fairly significant chunk go to Stade Rennes. But such sell on clauses are common amongst the sales of any young players.
