After 24 seasons as the leader on the sideline for the New England Patriots, head coach Bill Belichick was fired as the storied franchise felt like it was finally time to move on and start fresh, with former player Jerod Mayo taking over.
Although few disagreed that it was time to part ways with Belichick and begin a rebuilding process, especially with the team landing the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the hiring of Mayo was questionable.
After starting the season with a surprising win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Patriots have lost six straight games, and Mayo has seemingly hit a boiling point in terms of being frustrated with his players, whom he called “soft.”
Former Patriots superstar Rob Gronkowski recently talked about what Mayo said and how he believes it will be a learning experience for the first-time head coach.
“I feel like Coach Mayo is going to tone it down a little bit now after those comments and use it as a learning lesson,” Gronkowski said on “Up & Adams.”

At this point, the Patriots want to develop quarterback Drake Maye, who is the starter for presumably the rest of the season, while not losing the locker room with comments like this from Mayo.
This will not be an easy task for Mayo and his staff, but that’s the challenge they took on.
