The Jacksonville Jaguars have concluded their extensive coaching search by appointing Liam Coen, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, as their new head coach.
With Coen now at the helm, the organization’s focus has shifted to building a strong support system around their first-time head coach, who spent just one year coordinating Tampa Bay’s offense before landing this opportunity.
In what could be a significant development for the franchise, Sports Illustrated’s John Shipley reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars recently held discussions with Ron Rivera, the former Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders head coach.
Rivera met with the team over the weekend to explore potential roles on Coen’s staff.

While details about Rivera’s specific position remain undisclosed, sources suggest he’s being considered for a senior assistant role.
The timing couldn’t be better for Jacksonville, as they navigate through a transition period with both a first-year head coach and a rookie defensive coordinator in Anthony Campanile.
Rivera’s wealth of experience could provide the steady hand needed to guide this promising new leadership group into the 2025 season.
Rivera brings an impressive coaching résumé to the table.
His most recent stint as the Washington Commanders’ head coach from 2020 to 2023 saw mixed results, with one playoff appearance in 2020 but an overall record of 26-40-1.
However, it was his tenure with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019 that truly showcased his coaching prowess.
During this period, Rivera collected two AP Coach of the Year awards in 2013 and 2015, led the Panthers to seven playoff appearances, and reached Super Bowl 50 after claiming the NFC Championship.
His extensive experience includes valuable time as a defensive coordinator for both the San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears.
