Injuries defined the last two years of an otherwise prolific career for Utah quarterback Cam Rising, and just two days after he returned to the lineup from his latest ailment, the seventh-year veteran saw his campaign potentially come to an end. Rising is out indefinitely with multiple injuries, Utes coach Kyle Whittingham announced Monday, and true freshman Isaac Wilson is the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
Given that he already missed time this year and could be on the sidelines for the remainder of the season, Rising may be a candidate for another medical hardship waiver. Whittingham said it is an option that he and the team must consider, and should the NCAA grant Rising with an additional year, he would become a rare eighth-year player come 2025.
Another year of eligibility would open a number of options for Rising, who already transferred once in the early stages of his career and could command a market in the portal. Rising’s injury history will make plenty of teams weary, but he’s one of the best quarterbacks in college football if he’s healthy, and that could make him a very worthwhile flier in the transfer portal and one who’d command a pretty high NIL compensation.
