Stanford‘s 38-35 upset of No. 19 Louisville started and ended with Emmett Mosley V. The Cardinal’s first completion of the game? It went to Mosley. Stanford’s first touchdown on the game? It was a 62-yard play by Mosley, who scampered 45 yards after the catch to score. The Cardinal’s final touchdown of the game? Of course it went to Mosley.
The true freshman wide receiver lined up nearly attached to the formation on the right side of the line of scrimmage on a fourth-and-1 play with 49 seconds remaining. He feigned a block on a play-action pass, sprinted past the Cardinals’ defender and then made a diving, midair adjustment for the 25-yard, game-tying score.
Mosley wasn’t even done! After some questionable Louisville decision making gave Stanford the ball back on its own 45-yard-line, Mosley caught a pass with one second remaining to help Stanford — penalties from Louisville also helped — set up a game-winning 52-yard field goal.
All in all, Mosley finished with 13 catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
That performance, a career-best effort by the first-year receiver, was more than enough for Mosley to earn 247Sports True Freshman of the Week honors for Week 12.
“We’ve been recruiting him for a long time,” said Stanford coach Troy Taylor postgame. “When he made the commitment to us, we knew he was a special player. He’s got unbelievable skills, his resiliency and his toughness. He really rose to the occasion. Not surprised at all.”
Mosley could not have been more efficient on the day. He was targeted 14 times and caught 13 of those passes. It’s by far the most involved that he’s been this season. Mosley, who first emerged as a starter in Week 5 against Clemson, had only seen double-digit targets in one other game this season.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Chicago native almost matched his season production in one afternoon. He entered the day with 22 catches on the season for 193 yards and a touchdown.
Stanford, due to a rash of injuries, has been forced to rely on young pieces a lot in 2024. Mosley is one of the bright spots from a 2024 Cardinal class, which ranked 31st nationally, that those around the program hope can carry Stanford as Taylor enters Year 3 of his tenure.
“I’ve thought since he committed, he had a chance to be one of the better guys in the country,” Taylor said.
Mosley, who played high school football at Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita Catholic, ranked as the nation’s No. 77 wide receiver and Golden State’s No. 41 overall prospect. He picked Stanford over UCLA, Texas A&M and Washington, among others.
Given his family background, it’s not surprising to see Mosley emerge as a high-level athlete. His father Emmett played football at Notre Dame. His mother Cindy played soccer at Notre Dame and was a member of the U.S. national team. His sister Jalyn plays soccer for Iowa.
