It took a couple of weeks, but new Washington Head Coach Jedd Fisch is almost done hiring his assistant coaches.
According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Fisch is expected to hire Steve Belichick as Washington’s new Defensive Coordinator. Belichick coached outside linebackers and was the main defensive play caller for the New England Patriots the last four seasons.
The current expectation is that the University of Washington is going to hire Steve Belichick as its defensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports.

Belichick, who turns 37 at the end of March, is one of the sons of NFL Hall of Fame Coach Bill Belichick and has coached with the Patriots the last dozen years in a number of capacities. He was a defensive assistant his first four seasons, and then became the Patriots safeties coach the next three years. He became the full defensive backs coach in 2019, and then moved to outside linebackers starting in 2020.
The younger Belichick was a part of half of his father’s six Super Bowl wins with the Patriots. He was a defensive assistant on their Super Bowl XLIX-winning team and then was the safeties coach on the teams that won the Super Bowls for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
It’s also expected that Fisch won’t take long to fill out the other two positions left on his coaching staff at Washington.
It was initially reported by ESPN’s Field Yates that Belichick was interviewing for the UW DC job and that another New England assistant, Vinnie Sunseri, was also interviewing.
Fisch coached with Belichick and Sunseri during New England’s 2020 season when Fisch coached the quarterbacks.
Assuming Belichick’s arrival, this is the look of the new Washington coaching staff.
