Texas vs. Texas A&M is one of the biggest rivalries in college football. The problem, though, is that we haven’t seen this matchup since 2011.
With both programs in the SEC now, though, this is a game that we should expect to see every year moving forward. The 2024 edition will be the first time in a long time, but what’s at stake is completely worthy of this rivalry, which dates all the way back to 1894.
Texas is 10-1 and ranked No. 3 in the nation. Texas A&M, on the other hand, is 8-3 but ranked No. 15 in the nation. Both teams have major aspirations for the College Football Playoff, but there’s also this tiny little detail regarding things in the SEC: The winner of this game will play Georgia in the 2024 SEC Championship Game.
This will be Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s first shot at this rivalry game, but he knows how much it’s going to mean.
“The game is the game. As far as what we are trying to accomplish, you know, to win that game, to get to the SEC championship game. But I’m not naive to know the rivalry is the rivalry, and what this game means to the entire state of Texas, you know, and households being divided Thanksgiving weekend,” Sarkisian recently told the media (h/t On3).
Sarkisian revealed that he and the team are, of course, excited to play this rivalry matchup. With that said, there will be hype and plenty of emotion surrounding the game, but Texas has to control the things it can control. The Longhorns can’t allow the moment to get too big for them.
Overall, though, Sarkisian is happy that Texas vs. Texas A&M is back on the menu on the regular.
“I think it’s great for college football, that this game with us and them is going to matter on a grander scale than just what’s happening in the state of Texas. But I also know how much it means to every household in the state of Texas, so it’s pretty cool to be part of. I’m really excited,” he said.
