Over the last couple of years, Marshall coach Charles Huff has become a hot name behind the scenes for job openings because of the respect he has earned from his peers.
The 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year for the 2021 cycle, Huff was part of great staffs at places like Penn State and Alabama, where he helped mentor some of the best players in college football while also being part of championship-winning coaching staffs.
In three seasons at Marshall, Huff is 21-16 — including a 9-4 campaign last fall that saw the Thundering Herd go to South Bend and knock off Notre Dame. Job openings at places like Michigan State and Mississippi State are viewed as good potential fits for the 40-year old.
What makes Huff who he is as a coach?
“His relationship with the kids,” a Marshall staffer told 247Sports. “He’s very organized. Knows what he wants, knows how to motivate the kids. We’re struggling this year, injuries have gotten us, but the organization, the way we work, the culture he sets — just that type of stuff.”
Marshall is 5-6 and hoping to earn a bowl berth with a win Saturday vs. Arkansas State.
From game-planning, to recruiting, to fundraising, Huff is in the middle of everything important to the Marshall program. That mirrors Huff’s college career at Hampton, where he lined up at fullback, tight end, guard and center.
“I think he’d be a great candidate and good fit for a lot of places,” a source said. “He brings what head coaches need day to day. Organizationally, motivationally and the relationship with the kids, he’s the type of head coach people need nowadays.
“He has the ability to interact with boosters, interact with kids and he has the relationship with kids. He’s honest. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and the kids like that. He also demands a lot of his staff.”
