Spain’s win over Germany in the 2024 European Championship was a brilliant, tense, end to end game that thrilled neutrals and justified its’ pre-match billing as potentially one of the best matches of the tournament. Yet it was blighted by the decision to not award Germany a penalty for a handball, one UEFA has now admitted was a mistake. Of course, admitting this now hardly helps Germany or gives them what they deserved from the play.
That is certainly how retired Real Madrid and Germany legend Toni Kroos sees it, anyhow. @iMiaSanMia captured Kroos’ thoughts on the matter: “It took them three months to realise it was handball, which almost everyone actually managed to see in a second. That calms me down a lot [laughs]. Can I now call myself European champion because they’ve officially confirmed it? I don’t think so.”
It was, after all, the former Bayern Munich player’s final game for both club and country before his retirement, so to see it partly decided by an incorrect decision could be nothing short of infuriating.
