Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak once again had decisive impacts as Newcastle recorded a fifth successive Premier League win in a 2-1 victory at Tottenham on Saturday.
After beating Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford in their last game of 2024, Newcastle were aiming to defeat another ailing giant on their own turf to begin 2025.
And they did just that, with Gordon and Isak getting the goals after Dominic Solanke had put Spurs into an early lead.
Solanke’s headed opener from a sumptuous Pedro Porro cross was a welcome boost for the youngest Spurs starting XI (23y, 336d) seen in the Premier League since March 2015 (23y, 290d), with Ange Postecoglou’s men ravaged by injury and illness.
But there were just 140 seconds between that goal and the equaliser, a tidy finish from Gordon after Joelinton had somewhat controversially cut out a Lucas Bergvall pass with his hand.
That made it five successive Premier League games in which Gordon has recorded a goal or assist, the best such run of his top-flight career.
Newcastle got their noses in front in the 38th minute, Isak getting his toe on the ball to divert it goalwards after Radu Dragusin almost blocked Jacob Murphy’s dangerous pass into the danger zone.
As a result, Isak became only the third Newcastle player in Premier League history to score in seven successive matches after Alan Shearer and Joe Willock, the Swede finding himself in the form of his life.
Spurs were much improved in the second half, going especially close to an equaliser when hitting the post through Brennan Johnson with 54 minutes played.
Clear-cut chances were hardly frequent, though James Maddison fired agonisingly wide with 10 minutes to go, and Newcastle survived a desperate goalmouth scramble a few moments later.
Despite their improvement, Spurs failed to earn the point they arguably deserved, stretching their winless run at home in the league to six – their worst spell in front of their own fans since Juande Ramos’ time in charge (eight without a win at home).
Newcastle, however, continued their recent resurgence that’s seen them go level on 35 points with fourth-placed Chelsea for at least a couple of hours.
