Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter is going to need a bigger shelf.
On Thursday, Hunter received the first of what could be several honors this week when the Associated Press named him college football’s player of the year. The past nine players named AP College Football Player of the Year won the Heisman Trophy.
Former Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey (2015) was the last player to earn AP College Football Player of the Year honors without winning the Heisman.
In 12 games this season, Hunter has 92 receptions, 1,152 yards, 15 total touchdowns, 32 tackles, 11 passes defended, four interceptions and a forced fumble.
Per the AP, Hunter received 26 of the 43 votes for the award, followed by Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty (16) and Arizona State running back Cameron Skattebo (one).
