It shouldn’t be shocking that Urban Meyer is high on the Ohio State Buckeyes. After all, he coached in Columbus for seven seasons and won a national championship for them.
There’s a connection there — a deep one — but it doesn’t take a former plugged-in coach to know that Ohio State is on a roll right now. The Buckeyes quickly shook off the sting of the season-ending loss to Michigan and they’ve been dominant ever since in the College Football Playoff.
The 42-17 win over Tennessee in Round 1 turned out to just be the appetizer for the 41-21 route over No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
Now, the Buckeyes have to win two more games to secure another championship, but even with a tough Texas team up next in the Cotton Bowl, Meyer seems supremely confident that Ohio State will win it all. Providing, of course, that the same team that beat the Volunteers and Ducks shows up on Friday.
“If Team A shows up, this will be a wrap. Ohio State will lift the gold trophy,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast (h/t On3). “If their best players, the best roster in the country, plays like the best roster in the country, they’ll be national champs in a few weeks, and we’re witnessing it.”
Meyer is right to put faith in Ohio State’s roster. Especially at the skill positions, the Buckeyes arguably have the most talented team in the nation. Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson, Will Howard, Jack Sawyer, Denzel Burke and Caleb Downs, among others on the roster, all have an NFL future ahead of them.
In fact, Meyer thinks everyone on Ohio State’s roster can be an NFL player, and that’s obviously a huge advantage for the Buckeyes.
“Every player in Ohio State will be playing in the National Football League — every player. The offense line, maybe there might be a player or two that won’t play, but I’m sure they’ll be on a roster,” Meyer said. “But every skill player on Ohio State will be, I think, playing substantially in the National Football League. That’s how good they are.”
The Buckeyes are undoubtedly talented, but now it comes down to consistency. Can they be dominant for the third week in a row? We’re about to find out.
