From missing out on the matchday squad to being the man of the match and Vincent Kompany’s preferred choice to pair Joshua Kimmich at the heart of the midfield, Leon Goretzka’s return to the top at Bayern Munich has been impressive.
After Bayern’s Matchday 18 victory over VfL Wolfsburg Kompany singled out Goretzka for praise (captured via @iMiaSanMia), saying, “Leon’s story is good for the team because there are probably other players who are in a difficult situation. Leon has always worked hard and professionally in training and showed that he was hungry. The fact he’s now playing and performing is a good story for the team and for the young players. Leon reacted with his feet and not with words.”
Goretzka’s reemergence as a nailed-on starter will most definitely have ramifications for the rest of the squad. Aleksandar Pavlović will still get a decent amount of minutes as the third-choice midfielder given the immense talent and potential he possesses. João Palhinha on the other hand will be able to jot down “a place in the squad” right next to “my child’s life” on the list of things he’s absent from— this is looking like a huge miss of a signing.
