All of a sudden, Bayern Munich’s hot start to the second half of the season was squelched by Feyenoord and coach Vincent Kompany is seeking to pick up the pieces as his squad heads into the Black Forest to face SC Freiburg on Saturday — a task he knows will not be easy.
“Freiburg are very good at home. They’re a team with intensity and pace, a team that fights. We’ve previously said what good work they’ve done in recent years to reach this level. That shows that the team and the club are healthy. The coach is also showing what he can do in the Bundesliga. We wanted to be able to play again so quickly,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We lost (to Feyenoord). I’ll do what I always do. We won seven or eight games in a row. I keep calm in situations like this. It’s important that we talk about what we need to do better. We need to do our thing to make sure we’re back up there. Hopefully the answer will come on the pitch.”
Kompany knows that rebounding is always tough in the Bundesliga, where every club is eager to knock off Bayern Munich.
“The Bundesliga is maybe in the top three leagues in Europe. The level is very high. We lost the last game – that’s a fact. We only have the feeling that we’ve won a lot this season and that we were very dominant. We want to play like that in every game, in the Bundesliga and in Europe. We know where we want to get to,” said Kompany. “Our whole season needs to be a reaction [to last season]. We’ve said that from the start, also in terms of how we want to approach everything. What the guys have shown so far is full commitment. We want to continue to see that. The fans deserve it. We knew things wouldn’t immediately be perfect.
“To win every game. That’s the goal. You need to be there at all times to win titles. It would be unusual to win things without going through something negative in a season. You need to be there at those key moments”
With a few injuries and a suspension of Konrad Laimer to deal with, Kompany will have to make some lineup changes.
“The guys have only done regeneration so far. We’ve got final training later. Then we’ll know more. (Alphonso Davies) is injured, Konrad Laimer is suspended. João Palhinha and Sacha Boey could come into the equation. We need to see how the others react,” Kompany remarked. “It’s great that we’ve got this competition for places. If we have to play those two extra Champions League playoff games, I can’t see us not using every player. We want this competition for places — not just in this position but in the others. We’re all working together towards the same goal.”
