I don’t know what it is about copper and golf equipment but it’s definitely a thing.
As far as pretty much anyone remembers, PING started it with their beryllium copper wedges and while they don’t make ‘em like that anymore, we’ve still got copper underlays, faux-copper finishes on irons and wedges and even hints of copper on a few mini drivers.
My point is that, for whatever reason, golfers love copper.
Vokey heads back to the shed
For its part, Vokey has been out of the copper game for a bit but as its SM10 wedge lineup spins into Year 2, the company is heading to the shed and reaching for the ol’ Oil Can.
What do you think?
I won’t go so far as to say that Vokey’s latest take on copper is The Best Finish but, with a slightly milky look that I’d call the Slate Blue of copper wedges, it’s pretty damn fire.
About Vokey Oil Can wedges
There are a few things you need to know about Vokey SM10 Oil Can wedges.
- This Oil Can is a PVD-based finish intended to provide a rich copper color without giving off a ton of glare. Vokey says the new finish is durable, matching the standards of its other finishes.
- Vokey Oil Can wedges are being billed as “limited-edition” and the expectation is that they will sell out quickly.
- All 27 Vokey loft, bounce and grind combinations are available in both right- and left-handed versions. Bob Vokey is Canadian so that tracks.
If you need some help finding the right grind, Vokey offers a guide to its wedge grinds. There is also a wedge selector tool. We always recommend an in-person fitting where possible.
The rest of the Oil Can package
As part of the Oil Can experience, the stock shaft is a custom Project X wedge shaft that features a brushed steel finish.
(A quick aside: If this is how we’re doing the total package now, I can’t wait until the Vokey guys remember it’s time for Slate Blue again.)
The stock grip on the Vokey SM10 Oil Can wedges is a custom copper-colored Golf Pride Z-Grip.
