Colorado needed a miracle in order to extend Saturday’s Big 12 opener against Baylor. They got exactly that.
With the Buffaloes trailing 31-24 with two seconds left, quarterback Shedeur Sanders heaved a prayer toward the end zone, which was caught by LaJohntay Wester.
The game-tying extra point was knocked through the uprights by Alejandro Mata, sending the contest into overtime.
Colorado struck first in the overtime period, with Micah Welch punching it in from one yard out to give Colorado a 38-31 lead.
Colorado’s defense apparently wanted their moment in the sun, however, as Travis Hunter forced a fumble on Dominic Richardson that rolled into and out of the end zone, apparently giving the Buffs the victory.
After a premature field-storming by the Colorado student section, the call on the field of a fumble was confirmed, giving Deion Sanders perhaps his biggest win as coach of the Buffaloes.
Colorado stormed back from a 24-10 deficit in the second quarter, getting the game within a score at halftime. The two teams traded blows in the second half, with a missed field goal by the Bears cracking the window just enough for Colorado to convert on the miraculous touchdown.
The win moves Colorado’s record to 3-1 and drops Baylor’s to 2-2.
