Missouri is getting run out of College Station.
Midway through the second quarter of the Tigers’ road SEC opener, the Aggies jumped out to a 24-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown run from running back Le’Veon Moss.
At the half, Texas A&M (4-1, 2-0 in SEC) has outgained Missouri 305-79. The Aggies are 6-of-8 on third downs, while the Tigers are 0-of-6 and also failed on their lone fourth-down conversion.
The Tigers picked up where they left off in Week 4’s 30-27 double-overtime win against Vanderbilt (2-2, 0-1 in SEC). They easily could have lost that game, and their struggles against A&M show how lucky they were to escape with a win against the Commodores.
There’s still plenty of time left in the game, but with the way the first half has gone, that’s more of a threat to Missouri than an opportunity for it to mount a comeback.
If the result holds and Texas A&M wins decisively, it will be fascinating to see how the defeat impacts Missouri’s College Football Playoff odds later this season.
Even in an expanded 12-team playoff, Missouri’s no-show could be enough to leave it on the outside looking in.
The Tigers’ SEC schedule is weak, making this game crucial for their resume. They play at No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 26, their only other road game against a ranked opponent this season.
While Missouri could improve its playoff odds with a win against the Tide, does anyone think that’s possible after the team’s first-half performance against the Aggies?
Instead, Mizzou’s ugly first half in Week 6 could be the beginning of the end of its hopes to make the CFP.
