Bryce Mitchell has proven to be one of the best grapplers in the UFC’s talent-rich featherweight division, but what he did in a recent training session left one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach in shock and awe.
Over the years, “Thug Nasty” has relied on his wrestling skills and submission chops to slice through some pretty dangerous competition at 145 pounds. He won eight out of his first nine professional fights by way of submission before making his UFC debut back in 2018. Mitchell hasn’t been able to finish as often as he’d like, but his grappling skills have still been his biggest asset to date.
His lone UFC submission thus far was a spectacular twister finish over Matt Sayles back in 2019. It was only the second twister in UFC history and a massive performance that launched “Thug Nasty” up the featherweight ladder. Mitchell would go on to win his next three fights before running into future champion Ilia Topuria at UFC 282 in December 2022 and losing via submission.
While Mitchell is only 2-2 in his last four trips to the Octagon he’s still highly respected as a top-level grappler, especially when you look back at his incredible twister finish. What makes Mitchell’s twister abilities even more impressive is that he’s still refining the attack to this day. During a recent grappling session alongside 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu founder, Eddie Bravo, Mitchell demonstrated a new technique that pleasantly surprised the entire room.

“What!?” shouted Bravo. “I would have never figured that out.”
