Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck made his way to Miami via the transfer portal after a two-season tenure as a starter for the Bulldogs. Now that Beck is a member of the Hurricanes, what can the college football world expect from Miami in 2025?
Beck, who tossed for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2024, led Georgia to its seventh SEC Championship game appearance over the past eight seasons, respectively.
Unfortunately, Beck suffered a right elbow injury in the first half of the conference championship game against Texas. The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Longhorns without Beck and participated in the College Football Playoff against Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round in a losing effort, also without Beck under center.
As he aims to bounce back in South Beach next season, it is fair to mention that Beck didn’t have the best statistical season in 2024. Yes, Beck did rank 13th in the nation in total passing yardage, however, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound passer’s stats took a nosedive compared to a season prior.
In 2024, Beck’s yards per attempt average went from 9.5 (2023) to 7.8. Furthermore, Beck’s completion percentage dropped from 72.4% (2023) to 64.7% last season. Lastly, the new Miami quarterback threw 12 interceptions in 2024, which is double the total he threw in 2023 (six), respectively.
The Hurricanes are coming off a prolific 2024 offensive campaign which was largely led by former Miami quarterback Cam Ward. Ward, who was a Heisman finalist in 2024, tossed for 4,313 yards (second in the country) and 39 touchdowns (first in the country) while having completed 67.2% of his passes.
The Hurricanes were firmly in the College Football Playoff race late into the season, that is until they were upset by a then-four-loss Georgia Tech team on the road and a struggling Syracuse team to close out the season.
Since Ward has declared for April’s NFL Draft, it is now Beck’s turn to not only build up his draft stock but also help Mario Cristobal’s team build off of their 10-3 campaign, which is the best record Miami has had under Cristobal since he took over in 2022.
The quarterback position isn’t the only void the Hurricanes must account for, as Miami must make up for the departures of leading rusher Damien Martinez (1,002 rush yards), wideouts Xavier Restrepo (1,127 yards) and Jacolby George (752 yards) and tight end Elijah Arroyo (590 yards).
All in all, the Hurricanes 2025 campaign will rest on the health of Beck and if he can return to his normal form.
